Pastoral Ministry -- Deacon Jim Murphy and Pastoral Minister Charlene Murphy assist Fr. Liekhus in a variety of pastoral functions for the parishioners of St. John the Evangelist Church.

o Deacon Jim Murphy ministers in these areas:

  • Sacraments – Assists at the Eucharist, Baptisms and witnesses marriages. Prepares parishioners for Baptism and Marriage. Presides at funeral wakes and graveside services; Viaticum; Stations of the Cross; Benediction and Adoration.
  • Justice/Charity – Represents the parish on the Intercongregration Communities Association (ICA). Is a field advocate for annulments and an ex-officio member of the Parish Pastoral Council and liturgy committee.

o Pastoral Minister Charlene B. Murphy’s responsibilities include:

  • Sacrament of Baptism and the Sacrament of Marriage preparation classes
  • Field advocate for annulments
  • Spiritual Director
Religious Education & Faith Formation – St. John the Evangelist parish offers a wide variety of programs that help nurture and deepen the knowledge and understanding of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church including the sacraments and social issues that impact our daily lives.

The office of Religious Education/Faith Formation strives to provide sound Catholic education and spiritual nourishment through study and practice of our faith. The programs focus on the teachings of Jesus, the Eucharist and other sacraments. We believe that catechesis is a life long process of developing and nurturing the initial gift of faith. The purpose is to invite a response to Jesus Christ and His Church that is a living, conscious and active faith community.
  • Sunday School for ages 3 – 5 during the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass
  • Grades 1-8 on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.
  • Grades 9 & 10 on Sunday evenings 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
  • Adult Bible Study held in the fall and winter, with meetings once a week at various times.
  • Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) for those interested in joining the Catholic faith, for Catholics preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation, the Eucharist, and/or Confirmation, or Catholics desiring to refresh their understanding of Catholicism.
  • Marriage Preparation Classes
  • Baptism Classes
Music Ministry – Worship services and church events at St. John the Evangelist are enhanced by artistically planned and delivered liturgical vocal and instrumental programs. This ministry includes:
  • Adult Ensemble Choir – vocals & instruments with 7:15 p.m. Thursday rehearsal
  • Schola Contemporary Group
  • Children’s/Youth Choir – for special occasions, e.g. Christmas
  • Soloists and Musicians
  • Sunday evening Mass – vocals & instruments with 4:30 p.m. Sunday rehearsal
Health Ministry – To serve God as He wants us to, we must do all we can to achieve the best possible state of wellness. The Parish Nurse prays for all parishioners, especially those that are ill, their families and those who provide their care. A group rosary is offered after Wednesday and Saturday Masses. Health information and referrals are provided to those who need greater expertise.

Hispanic Ministry – Ministry to the Spanish-speaking population of St. John's is led by Deacon Juan Duran.  He can be reached at 612-719-2622.  Sunday Mass in Spanish is at 3:00 p.m., with confessions one half hour beforehand.  Bible Study is Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Community Room.  Religious Education is Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the school and the Community Room.  Prayer Group is on Saturday evenings, 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  Youth group meets every Saturday in Leo's Den from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Youth Ministry
– Our youth ministry is in a transitional phase.  Fr. Liekhus is working with our 7-12 graders and their parents to discern how best to serve our youth without a youth minister on staff.  If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Fr. Liekhus at 952-945-9441.
